Which digital door lock brand is best? A buying guide for aluminum doors
Digital door locks come in 2 main systems: Main Lock, which replaces the existing handle, and Rim Lock, which is installed additionally on the door surface. Choose the system based on the thickness of the door panel. Aluminum swing doors with a thickness of at least 45 mm can use a Main Lock right away. If the door is thinner than that, Rim Lock is the better option. Sliding doors support only Hook Lock systems, so they have fewer options than swing doors. Before ordering, always measure the door thickness, frame face width, opening direction, and the position of the existing holes completely in advance.

Choosing a digital door lock in 2026 is not difficult only because of the brand or price. The most common problem on-site is that homeowners buy a model they like, but it cannot be installed on their aluminum door because the frame is too narrow, or because it is a sliding door with limitations in the locking system.
SGQ has experience installing digital door locks on aluminum doors and sliding doors across many projects. This article is therefore written from the perspective of real installation technicians, not just based on catalog specifications.
🔵 Not sure which digital door lock model is right for your home door?
Send a photo of your door along with the frame dimensions to the SGQ Khlong Sam technician team — we will help you shortlist the right models for free before you place an order.
What is a digital door lock, and how is it different from a traditional lock?
A digital door lock is a door locking system that replaces traditional keys with identity verification through fingerprint, PIN code, card, or mobile application. It has no keyhole, reducing the risk of forced entry and key duplication.
What is the difference between Main Lock and Rim Lock? Which one should you choose?
Main Lock replaces the existing lock and handle, and requires door drilling according to the specifications. It is suitable for swing doors with sufficient thickness. Rim Lock is installed additionally on the door surface without requiring new holes, making it suitable for thin doors, sliding doors, or frameless glass doors.

How many unlocking methods are there? Choose the right one for the actual users in your home.
There are 5 main unlocking methods: fingerprint, PIN code, RFID card, mobile app, and facial recognition (in high-end models). Each method suits different types of users.
What features should different types of homes choose?
- Homes with elderly people or young children → PIN codes are easier than fingerprint access, because dry fingers or faded fingerprints may not scan reliably.
- Rental homes / Airbnb → Choose a model that can generate temporary codes from the app and revoke access instantly.
- Offices / workplaces → Choose a model that can store entry and exit records, with a Master Code for the manager.
- Gate doors or outdoor installations → Choose only models with IP65 waterproof protection.
Can it be installed on an aluminum door? A pre-purchase site measurement checklist.
These are the questions SGQ customers ask most often, and they are the points that general guides rarely explain completely. Aluminum doors have limitations in frame size and door thickness, which determine which lock models can be used.
What should be measured before ordering a digital door lock? A 5-point checklist.
- Door thickness: Measure at the edge of the door panel (not the glass) to determine whether Main Lock or Rim Lock is suitable.
- Frame face width: Measure the side where the lock will be installed. It should be at least 5 cm for a Main Lock.
- Opening direction: Does the door open inward or outward? Is it left-hand or right-hand? (This determines the direction of the latch bolt.)
- Existing drilled holes: Is there already a keyhole? Where is it located? (Send a photo to SGQ for checking.)
- Backset distance: Measure the distance from the edge of the door panel to the center of the hole. The standard is 60 mm or 70 mm.

ถ้าประตูหนาไม่ถึงสเปก หรือเฟรมเล็กกว่า 5 ซม. ควรทำยังไง?
There are 2 possible approaches: switch to a more flexible Rim Lock, or modify the frame to increase its width (this requires an aluminum technician). SGQ can assess this immediately if you send a photo of the door along with the frame dimensions.

Digital door locks for sliding doors: limitations you should know before buying.
Aluminum sliding doors support only Rim Lock systems with a Hook Lock mechanism, because they must lock horizontally instead of vertically. This means the number of available models is much more limited than for swing doors, and some models may require modification of the sliding rail before installation. If the sliding door frame is very narrow (less than 45 mm), send the dimensions to SGQ so we can help shortlist suitable models first.
How suitable is an IP65 waterproof digital door lock for outdoor use?
IP65 means the lock is completely dust-tight and can withstand direct water jets. It is suitable for gate doors or entrances exposed to wind-driven rain, but it does not mean the lock can be submerged in water. If it is installed in an area exposed to direct sunlight for long periods, a canopy or cover should be added to help extend the lifespan of the control panel. ELH models with this level of water resistance are: H2, S1 Pro, and A300.
Samsung vs Yale vs Hafele vs ELH: Which digital door lock brand is best for aluminum doors?
SGQ Khlong Sam sells only ELH locks because the brand was designed from the beginning to support all aluminum door systems, including swing doors, sliding doors, and frameless glass doors. This is different from other brands, which are often designed primarily for wooden doors first and only later adapted to support aluminum doors.

What is the difference between an official local-warranty unit and a grey import unit? Does it affect warranty claims?
Official local-warranty units come with clear warranty coverage and spare parts support in Thailand. This is very important for digital door locks, because if the control panel fails after the warranty expires, spare parts for grey import units are very difficult to find. SGQ sells only official ELH units with after-sales service.
The aluminum door handles sold through SGQ are official Thailand units, with on-site technician service available in Pathum Thani and nearby areas. You can also send a photo of your door along with the frame dimensions to the technician team so they can help shortlist models that fit your door before you place an order.
How much should you budget for a digital door lock in 2026, and what do you get at each price range?
The prices shown are for the lock unit only and do not include installation fees. For more information, please contact SGQ. The estimate will depend on the type of door, the distance, and any frame modification costs (if required).

If the battery dies, how can you still get into the house? 4 emergency steps to handle it.
Most digital door locks have an emergency power port, allowing you to unlock the door even when the battery is dead:
- Method 1: Touch a 9V battery to the emergency terminals under the control panel, then enter the PIN code to unlock immediately.
- Method 2: Some models support a power bank via a Micro USB cable (check the manual first).
- Method 3: Use the physical backup key included in the box, and keep it somewhere else, not inside the house.
- Method 4: Contact the technician team to reset the system in case of a control board malfunction.
Why should you use alkaline batteries? Can rechargeable batteries be used?
Alkaline batteries provide 1.5V per cell, which is the voltage level the low-battery warning system in digital door locks is designed for. NiMH rechargeable batteries provide only 1.2V, which can cause the battery warning system to function incorrectly. The lock may continue to operate normally, but without warning until the battery suddenly runs out. SGQ recommends using only AA alkaline batteries from Duracell or Energizer.
7 after-sales service points to check before making a purchase decision.
After-sales service is a factor that is often overlooked but is extremely important for digital door locks, because when the circuit board fails or you forget the master code, you need a technician you can actually reach and spare parts available in Thailand, not something that takes months to order from overseas.
Based on discussions on Pantip, the main problem for digital door lock buyers is not the product itself, but after-sales service that cannot be reached when issues arise. Before buying, you should ask the seller these questions completely:
- Is on-site service available? How much is the technician call-out fee?
- How many years is the product warranty, and what does it cover?
- If the circuit board fails, are spare parts available in Thailand? How much do they cost?
- Is there an emergency contact channel outside business hours?
- Can software updates be done by yourself, or does a technician need to handle them?
- What are the warranty claim conditions? Do you need to prove the cause of the damage yourself?
- How can you reset the lock if you forget the master code (Admin Code)?

Frequently asked questions about digital door locks.
1. Can a digital door lock be installed on an aluminum door?
Yes, but the model must match the type of door. Aluminum swing doors with a thickness of ≥ 45 mm can use a Main Lock right away. If the door is thinner than that, a Rim Lock is recommended. For sliding doors, only Hook Lock models can be used. It is recommended to send a photo of the door along with the frame dimensions to SGQ so the team can help choose the right model before ordering.
2. What should you do if the digital door lock battery runs out?
Use a 9V battery on the emergency terminals under the control panel, then enter the code to unlock the door immediately. Or use the physical backup key included in the product box. To prevent this, set a low-battery alert in the app and replace the batteries every 6–12 months, depending on usage frequency.
3. Which is better, Samsung or Yale?
Samsung SHP stands out for its mobile app and Smart Home integration, making it suitable for aluminum swing doors and wooden doors. Yale offers a wider range of models for sliding doors. For aluminum door applications, SGQ recommends ELH because it is specifically designed to support all types of aluminum doors directly.
4. Does the door need to be drilled when installing a digital door lock?
A Main Lock requires drilling new holes or enlarging the existing holes according to the backset specification of that model. The technician will measure and carry out the work. A Rim Lock does not require drilling and is mounted with screws on the surface of the door panel. If the door already has an existing keyhole, most Main Lock models can use the original hole.
5. Can a digital door lock be installed on a sliding door?
Yes, but there are far fewer compatible models than for swing doors. Only horizontal-locking Rim Lock models with a Hook Lock mechanism can be used. Brands that offer sliding door models include Yale YSD100 and ELH L200. You should provide the frame dimensions for the technician to check before ordering.
6. Which digital door lock should you choose with a THB 5,000 budget?
The THB 4,000–7,000 range is the sweet spot, offering complete core functions including fingerprint, PIN, card, and backup key, with IP44–55 water resistance. SGQ recommends the ELH S1 for swing doors or the ELH L200 for sliding doors, for general residential use. If you want app connectivity and entry/exit history, increase the budget to THB 6,500–8,000.
Which model should you choose if you want to view entry/exit history or create temporary codes?
You should choose a model that supports a mobile app such as TT Lock or Tuya Smart, which allows you to create remote temporary codes, set access schedules, and view real-time log history. ELH models sold by SGQ that support these features include A300, H2, and C200, with prices starting from THB 6,500.
